Support Communities, Not Gas Companies

It's been reported in the ABC that the Prime Minister has asked Treasury to model how to impose a tax on gas exports in the May budget. This is a major progression in the campaign and shows that we have a major opportunity right now to secure this critical reform.

We should not be giving our gas away for free to massive corporations, and should introduce a 25% gas export tax. Nature Conservation Council of NSW is calling for this as part of Renew Australia for All, an alliance of more than 80 organisations across social services, unions, environment ...

We should not be giving our gas away for free to massive corporations, and should introduce a 25% gas export tax. Nature Conservation Council of NSW is calling for this as part of Renew Australia for All, an alliance of more than 80 organisations across social services, unions, environment organisations, faith groups, community groups and green industry, working together to deliver a fairer, more sustainable and secure future for everyone in Australia.

It’s so important we let the Labor Government know that we want to see them invest in communities, not gas companies. Can you call your MP and tell them you support taxing super-profitable gas companies?

NOTE: If your local MP is not in the Labor Party you can still get involved by calling key decision-makers!

What to say on the call

1. Who you are: Share your name, any group/organisation you're part of and anything else in your experience that you think is relevant, particularly how you’re experiencing cost of living pressures in this moment, if you’ve ever been impacted by climate disasters, your occupation etc.

2. Context for your call: "I saw in the ABC that the government is seeking advice from the Department of Treasury on how to impose a tax in the May budget on gas exports"

3. Your ask: "I support a gas export levy of 25% to replace the Petroleum resource rent tax (PRRT). This could generate billions in revenue that could fund critical services for years, including to support our health system, public schools, housing and income support"

4. State your reasons. For e.g.

  • Super-profitable gas companies are raking in even more billions of dollars in war-profits as the horrific war in Iran has caused enormous price spikes.
  • If a 25% tax on Australia’s natural gas exports had been introduced in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it would have already raised $63.8 billion, which could fund a range of critical services for years, including to support our health system, schools, housing, income support etc.
  • I agree with the PM’s Department when they said in the request to the Treasury Department that "Energy producers should not benefit from high international prices at the expense of domestic customers".
  • We should not be giving our natural resources to super-profitable gas companies for free, instead we should be using these resources to support communities to prepare and respond to climate disasters, and to alleviate cost-of-living pressures on families and households.

5. Thank them for listening: Thank whoever you are speaking to and let them know that you feel encouraged that the government is considering the tax, and hope to see it before or as part of the May budget.
