The community took faith that finally, this new government would do what it has been promising for years from opposition and fix the Darling/Baaka River.

Two years later, and the blueprint to fix the Darling/Baaka River has been written - the hard work has been done. Just in time to be included in the new water rules for the Darling/Baaka River that are due to be renewed for ten years in July this year.

Yet we have serious concerns that the Minns Government won’t act, and instead continue with the broken rules that led to two mass fishkills in recent years.

We must act now to ensure that we don’t miss this opportunity for healthy rivers before the plans are locked in place for 10 years.

I am write with deep concern for the ongoing ecological crisis unfolding in the Darling/Baaka River. The mass fish kills at Menindee and Walgett are heartbreaking, and they are clear evidence of a system in collapse. These are not isolated events—they are symptoms of long-standing mismanagement and over-extraction in the Northern Basin. Our rivers are sick, and they urgently need your leadership to survive. We are on the path for more fish kills unless you act.

In July 2024, the Connectivity Expert Panel handed you a comprehensive and science-backed blueprint to restore river health and stop these devastating fish kills. I urge you to implement their recommendations in full in 2025.

The report outlines practical, sensible reforms like providing base flows, not allowing rivers to be pumped until they stop flowing, and protecting environmental water. These reforms can give the river, and the communities who depend on it, a fighting chance.

Premier, we can’t afford more delays. Every dead fish and dry riverbed tells the story of inaction. Please show that you stand with everyday people, First Nations custodians, and future generations by taking bold and immediate steps to restore the Darling/Baaka River.
