Land clearing remains one of the biggest threats to biodiversity across the state with more than 180,000 hectares of trees cleared between 2018 to 2023 – the majority for agriculture.

When land is cleared, our native Australian vegetation, and the habitat it provides for wildlife, is lost. Once these ecosystems are destroyed, they can take decades or even centuries to recover, and many never fully return to their original ecological condition. Protecting existing native habitat is therefore one of the most effective and immediate ways to safeguard biodiversity, support threatened species, and maintain healthy ecosystems for future generations.

Urgent action is needed to strengthen legal protections for nature against competing interests of development, agriculture and forestry.

Will you please write to your local MP and ask them what they are doing to stop land clearing?

We know that unique messages are the most impactful.

 1. Tell your local member about yourself – who you are, where you are from, who you represent and why nature is important to you.

 2. Ask your local member what they are doing to strengthen nature laws and stop land clearing. You may like to raise the following points:

  • Before the 2023 election, the Labor Government made a commitment to stop excess land clearing, but have not yetdelivered this promise.
  • In NSW more than 66,000 hectares of native vegetation was cleared in 2023 alone (an area 12 times the size of Sydney Harbour!).
  • Current nature laws have too many loopholes and are failing to protect nature – we need laws that have more power than competing industries.
  • Agriculture is the biggest driver of habitat loss. The rules set by Local Land Services are out of touch with community expectations and allow too much native vegetation to be cleared, with little oversight.
  • Since the NSW Local Land Services vegetation clearing codes were introduced in 2018 more than 110,000 hectares of native trees have been cleared for agriculture.
TIPS:
  • Be sure to be polite – politicians and their staff will disregard rude emails.
  • Ask your politician to meet with you – we’d love to know if you hear from them!
