Our best scientists warn the Koala is at risk of extinction in NSW. Logging and land clearing and devastating fires have seen Koala populations halve in the last 20 years. They need our help.

I am writing to express my strong support for the creation of the full 175,000 hectare Great Koala National Park.

This park would create a huge legacy, by protecting and connecting much of our state’s best wildlife habitat.

But despite Labor's election commitment to delivering the Great Koala National Park, after over 700 days in government, not only do koalas still not have their park, in that time over 8000 hectares of the proposed park - an area bigger than 10,000 football fields - has been logged.

Recently the logging industry and unions have been making false claims about jobs and koala populations.

These claims are rubbish and can be safely ignored.  The government’s own advice and assessments show this.

Our best scientists warn the Koala is at risk of extinction in NSW. Logging and land clearing and devastating fires have seen Koala populations halve in the last 20 years. That is why the NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee added Koalas to the endangered species list in 2022. Koalas need this sanctuary to improve their chances of survival.

That’s why I’m asking for your help to ask the Premier and Cabinet to meet their commitment.

The logging industry has also claimed 9000 jobs are at risk if the park goes ahead. The number has no basis in fact. The Natural Resources Commission assessed there are 590 jobs in harvesting, haulage and milling in the entire Northern Region. Many of these jobs are not reliant on timber from the proposed park area and the Great Koala National Park.

Meanwhile, logging our native forests is neither economically nor environmentally sustainable.

The NSW timber industry and its workers need a plan for the future and so do our forests and the species that rely on them.
