The logging industry is currently writing to NSW MPs asking for their support to continue unsustainable industrial logging in our native forests including some of the last critical habitat for endangered species like the Koala and Greater Glider.

We need to make sure NSW Parliamentarians get the facts about what is going on ...

We need to make sure NSW Parliamentarians get the facts about what is going on in our forests and recognise the opportunity to end public native forest logging and refocus the timber industry towards a sustainable plantation based future.

Our forests and forest animals need a plan for the future, and so do timber industry workers.

The ongoing logging of public native forests by the Forestry Corporation NSW is costing taxpayers money, destroying the homes of endangered species like the Koala and Greater Glider and undermining the NSW Labor Government’s credibility on the environment.

Despite your Government’s commitment to a Great Koala National Park, right now an area the size of 10,000 football fields is subject to active logging inside the area of the proposed Great Koala National Park - its values are being undermined even before the park is opened.

Recently, Forestry Corporation has been accused of deliberately logging the homes of Endangered Greater Gliders in the Styx River State Forest - a clear breach of logging rules. In the last five years Forestry Corporation NSW has been prosecuted eight times and been issued with 14 penalty notices for logging rule breaches. Their rule-breaking behaviour is systemic.

This action of Forestry Corporation NSW is not just destroying the homes of some of our most iconic and threatened animals, it is putting the environmental legacy of your Government at risk and damaging the social licence of the timber industry for the future.

The facts are these:

* Last year, approximately 11,000 hectares of NSW public native forests were logged - an area almost 40 times the size of the Sydney CBD.

* Native forest logging is hugely wasteful with less than 10% of the timber logged ending up as a high value timber product. Approximately 60% is left on the forest floor, another 30% ends up as wood chips, firewood and other low value products.

* Housing construction uses only a small fraction of wood from native forests. 95% of timber used in housing construction comes from plantation pine trees - less than 5% comes from native forests for which there are sustainable alternatives.

* Australia exports about five times the volume of timber compared to imports, including significant quantities of plantation timber. The opportunities for growth in the timber industry is in manufacturing higher-value timber products here in NSW, not continuing native forest logging and exporting plantation timbers.

*Forestry Corporation NSW has reported successive annual losses from their native forest operations despite being the recipient of millions in Government subsidies each year.

Stopping native forest logging in NSW would prevent 76 million tonnes of carbon entering the atmosphere by 2050. That’s equivalent to converting 240,000 homes to solar power. There are significant opportunities for your Government to recognise the carbon value of native forests.

Victoria and Western Australia have recently ended public native forest logging recognising the future is in plantations, not in native forest logging. South Australia and the ACT ended logging decades ago.

Now the NSW timber industry and its workers need a plan for the future and so do our forests.

I urge you to support an immediate moratorium on logging in the area of the proposed Great Koala National Park and High Density Greater Glider Habitat as the first step towards an end to public native forest logging in NSW and a reorientation of the timber industry in NSW towards a sustainable plantation based future.
